The International 2022 ended on October 30. The final prize pool of the tournament was $18.9 million. European team Tundra Esports won the main Dota 2 competition with 20 teams from around the world.
Team Spirit, winners of last year’s The International, finished sixth in the group stage. Because of this, they were placed in the bottom round of the playoffs. The first round of the lower grid was held in a bo1 format – that is, until one win. There they lost to BOOM Esports from the Philippines and finished 13-16th.
Team Spirit’s performance in the group stage disappointed spectators and analysts. They expected to see the team at least in the top three, but they lost to lesser known opponents. The impression was that the players were too confident in this tournament.
Thunder Awaken and Team Liquid showed a game worthy of a grand final. Peruvian and European teams fought in a bo3 format: the match ended with two victories of one of the teams.
Two games gave the audience a lot of emotions. In the first, the Peruvians were victorious, and in the second, the European team came out on top. But the most fiery spectacle awaited the audience in the decisive round.
The young Peruvians from Thunder Awaken dominated most of the game, and Team Liquid held their ground, fighting for every inch of the map, making tough decisions, but still falling behind. At one point everyone was confident that the South American team would win, but Team Liquid’s years of experience played a key role. A single mistake by their opponent allowed them to turn the situation around at the decisive moment and destroy the enemy “Ancient”. This game turned out to be the most unpredictable of the tournament.
Team Secret and Tundra met three times in the tournament. First, in the group stage, where Tundra easily defeated their opponents with a score of 2 : 0. Both games lasted less than an hour. At that moment it was clear that the team would go far and there were no obvious competitors.
In the final, Tundra won in their usual confident style in a little over half an hour.
After The International 2022, teams will earn Dota Pro Circuit points at various tournaments. They are needed to get an invitation to the next The International.
